History of Valentines Day Celebrations
Valentines Day is supposed to have originated during the Roman Empire, where people celebrated the god of fertility on this day, this day was also marked as the start of spring and was celebrated as the feast of Lupercalia. During Roman times young boys would draw out chits from a box with the names of girls written on them, they would then be considered as a couple for the period of a year, at times these matches would become serious relations even leading to marriage. Gradually these celebrations took on a Christian hue and 14th of February was christened as St. Valentine’s Day. People would celebrate by feasting and making merry with their near and dear ones and exchanging tokens of love between couples.
